In 2019, India production of crude steel rose by 7.7 percent to 111 million tons. While many of the plants in India are government owned via the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), there is a vibrant corporate business as well with global players such at Tata Steel, which began production in the 19th century when India was still a British colony.

This was announced by the federal minister for Steel, Dharmendra Pradhan in India’s upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, in response to a question from a member.
China continues to lead the world in production. India surpassed Japan to take the Number 2 spot. The United States remains in fourth spot with production up only 1 percent despite the government’s import duties on foreign metals.
