According to an official order issued by the Government of India, renowned scientist Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas has been appointed as the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
Vyas, who is currently director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), has been appointed in place of Sekhar Basu who is due to retire.
A mechanical engineering graduate from MS University, in the state of Gujarat, Vyas trained at the BARC training school in 1979, after which he joined the Fuel Design and Development Section of the Reactor Engineering Division of BARC. He worked in the design and analysis of nuclear reactor fuels, and has also worked extensively in thermal hydraulics and stress analysis of critical reactor core components.
