With the Government of India’s resolve to take healthcare to the last mile, a new wave of opportunities has been created for stakeholders in India’s healthcare ecosystem. Lifestyle diseases, a rising demand for affordable healthcare delivery systems, rapid health insurance penetration, and mergers and acquisitions are driving the healthcare market in India. According to a report by trade body Assocham, India’s Healthcare Industry may see a three-fold jump in value terms to $372 billion by 2022.
A health survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Office, Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, found:
- A decline in the share of state-owned hospitals in treating patients
- Private sector healthcare to be the most important single source of treatment in both rural and urban areas – providing 58 percent of the hospitals and 81 percent of the doctors in India
- India’s non-communicable disease burden is responsible for approximately 60% of all deaths
- Out-of-pocket expenditure constitutes over 60% of all health expenses; this impacts a large segment of India’s population
The government’s National Health Policy aims to bridge the gaps by increasing state spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2025. The federal government’s healthcare initiative — Ayushman Bharat — is a bold and ambitious move that has the potential to improve the health of underprivileged citizens.
Adopting smart technologies will help increase access to hospitals, patient satisfaction, and affordability of care. “Healthcare providers are now focusing on patient care and enhancing clinical outcomes by adopting state-of-the art digital technology and advanced medical processes. Embracing and adopting technical advancements at an equipment and procedural level can help elevate clinical outcomes like never before while making it effective, affordable, and accessible,” says Dr. Dilpreet Brar.
Implementing innovative and scalable medical technology will widen the safety net of healthcare, increase regional coverage, and improve delivery of healthcare across the country.
