Swedish furniture and home furnishing retailer Ikea inaugurated its first store in India on August 9 in the southern city of Hyderabad and will soon have two more. The 400,000 square foot facility in Hyderabad has the biggest Ikea restaurant anywhere in the world, with seating for 1,000 people. In India, the company offers a delivery service, using electric rickshaws that are powered by rooftop solar panels on the store.

Ikea’s store in Navi Mumbai, on Mumbai city’s eastern outskirts, is set to go live later this year. The company announced the purchase of 10 acres of land in Gurugram a satellite city of New Delhi, where it plans to build a store. Its Bangalore outlet will commence operations in the summer of 2020. Additionally, it is scouting for sites in Chennai and Pune. Ikea has set a target of opening 25 stores in India by 2025.
Ikea’s India chief executive Peter Betzel said that the company will start its online furniture retail operations in India by March 2019, to create a multichannel experience for its customers in the country. Per the Hong Kong Trade Development Council‘s report, the Indian furniture market is expected to touch $27 billion by 2022.
