Hospital In Tamil Nadu Launches Equipment for Brachytherapy

The Multi Super-Specialty Government Hospital located at Omandurar Estate became the third state-owned hospital in Chennai to  install and inaugurate brachytherapy equipment. These devices were purchased from Germany at a cost of $250,000 each.

The machines are mainly used to treat cervical cancer where only the cancerous tissues are completely destroyed without affecting other organs near the tumor. The treatment, which is effective for advanced stages of cervical cancer where surgery is not possible, is completed in 10 minutes.

A patient needs to undergo three sessions of brachytherapy which costs the government over $315 per person. However, the treatment is free for the patient since the Chief Minister’s Medical Insurance Plan covers the expenses.
