In 2018, India’s movie industry reached an all-time high of $2.5 billion. Reports estimate the movie market will grow to $3.7 billion by 2020. India is known world-wide for its domestic movie industry, with ticket sales reaching $1.4 billion in 2018.
As India’s film industry grows, foreign movies continue to gain popularity. Avengers: Infinity War became Hollywood’s top grossing film in India for 2018, with ticket sales approaching $31.6 million. Movies produced in Hollywood grossed $132 million in the country during 2018, compared with sales of $115 million in 2017.
India’s booming film industry has caught the attention of Hollywood movie studios. Recognizing the popularity of film, “blockbuster” movies are now introduced in India on the same day as they are released to the rest of the world. Foreign films are now dubbed in India’s local languages, improving their popularity in the country.
