Google, and its affiliate, South San Francisco-based Verily (subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet), have been conducting a global clinical research program with a focus on India to screen for two conditions that impact millions of people worldwide: diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.
The studies involved Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai, and Chennai-based Sankara Nethralaya, both located in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The research results demonstrated that the algorithm performed on par with general ophthalmologists and retinal specialists assessing the images for disease, said a blog post by Verily product manager Sunny Virmani and Google program manager Kasumi Widner. The collaboration will expand to clinics throughout India.
