Global Chip Makers to Invest in India’s Semiconductor Sector

Malvern, Pennsylvania-based Silicon Power Group, will invest $121 million to set up a facility in India’s Odisha state. The company proposes to manufacture 5.9″ silicon carbide, a component that goes into chips used in electric cars and other industrial power and energy applications. The investment will be made by the group’s joint venture in Gujarat with RIR Power Electronics. The company said it will start operations in the next 18 to 24 months.

Silicon Power is involved in the design, development, manufacturing and testing of high-power semiconductor devices and utility-applicable systems.

Santa Clara CA-based chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will invest $400 million in India over the next five years said the company’s Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster. “Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide,” Papermaster said. AMD’s new 500,000-square-foot design center in Bangalore will commence by end of this year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years, he added.

Other U.S. investments in India include a multi-year $400 million plan by Santa Clara, CA-based chip equipment maker Applied Materials, in June this year, to set up an engineering center. Chipmaker Micron based in Idaho made a $825 million investment in a semiconductor testing and packaging unit in Gujarat.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated Semicon India 2023 on July 28, in Gujarat. Speakers for the three-day event included Foxconn chairman Young Liu, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, and AMD CTO Mark Papermaster. Prominent players in the semiconductor industry, such as IBM, Marvell, Vedanta, Lam Research, NXP Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics, Grantwood Technologies, Infineon Technologies, and Applied Materials, among others, participated.

U.K.-based SRAM & MRAM Group‘s Indian unit, SRAM & MRAM Technologies and Projects, hopes to invest  $300 million in the first phase to establish a semiconductor fabrication unit in the Ganjam region of the state of Odisha.  The company signed an MoU with the state government in March for this project. The unit aims to produce memory chips for various electronic devices. The company plans to finalize the site within two years and provide employment to 5,000 people.
