Aware of the global garment industry’s water demands, and the resulting pollution it causes, Gap Inc, the San Francisco-based retailer will open a facility in Ahmedabad, India, in 2020 that will study ways to reduce water waste.
Gap will team with textile manufacturer Arvind Limited headquartered in Ahmedabad, to launch an 18,000-square-foot plant, which it’s calling an “innovation center.” The company will also invest in a new treatment facility fifteen miles away from the site that will reuse water from the plant, instead of drawing it from from the nearby community’s supply.

Arvind’s denim factory consumes eight million liters of fresh water per day. Once the facility is built, it will tap into wastewater from the municipal line and clean it. Gap and Arvind estimate this will save three billion liters of fresh water by the end of 2020.
Gap Inc. chief executive officer Art Peck said, “For us, this was a step forward.”
