Ford Motor Company has announced its intention to repurpose its Chennai plant in Tamil Nadu, India, for export-focused manufacturing.
The move aligns with Ford’s global Ford+ growth strategy and demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to India as a crucial market for its international operations. Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group, expressed gratitude for the Tamil Nadu Government’s support during the decision-making process and highlighted the company’s aim to leverage the region’s manufacturing expertise to serve new global markets.
Ford’s presence in India remains significant, with 12,000 employees currently working in Global Business Operations in Tamil Nadu. This number is projected to increase by 3,000 jobs over the next three years. When combined with the workforce at the engine manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, India represents Ford’s second-largest salaried workforce globally.

The company continues to support its existing customer base of one million in India, offering comprehensive services including aftermarket parts, warranty support, and general customer care. This commitment underscores Ford’s dedication to maintaining a strong presence in the Indian market despite shifts in its manufacturing focus.
While specific details about the type of manufacturing and other aspects of the repurposed Chennai plant have not been disclosed, Ford has indicated that this information will be released in due course.
