On her first visit to India as American ambassador to the United Nationa, Nikki Haley said she saw opportunities in developing stronger ties with India in multiple ways, especially in countering terrorism and military cooperation. Haley’s parents immigrated from India and last visited India when she was Governor of South Carolina
“We see opportunities between the United States and India in a multiple level of ways. Whether it’s countering terrorism … whether it’s the fact that we’re going to start to work together more strongly on the military aspect. There is a lot of things that India and the U.S. have in common,” she said.

Haley called on Prime Minister Modi to convey greetings from President Donald Trump. Modi expressed his appreciation for Trump’s South Asia and Indo-Pacific strategies, and commended Trump’s initiative toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. A statement released by the Prime Minister’s office said that both sides expressed “confidence” in a strong India-U.S. partnership which was important for global “peace” and “security”. “Both dignitaries discussed ways to enhance India-U.S. cooperation including on counter-terrorism and in multilateral fora”, noted the statement.
