The Wall Street Journal reports that in India, Domino’s has tarted train deliveries in February. The company now offers delivery of pizzas on more than 200 train services and plans to extend the service to dozens of new routes in coming months.
How does it work?
In the beginning, the fast-food chain identified 41 train stations, from Delhi to Agra to Jalandhar, that were located near its branches. Customers had to place orders online, over the phone, or through a text message at least two hours before the train reached the platform. Deliverymen checked train timings, found parking at the stations, the right platforms, train coaches, and seat numbers to deliver orders!
“It’s a huge opportunity for us,” says Harneet Rajpal, a senior vice-president for Domino’s in India. With tens of millions of passengers using India’s railways on a daily basis, other fast-food chains such as Pizza Hut, KFC and Subway are negotiating a similar arrangement with India’s railway authorities.
