At $25.7 million, Avengers: Endgame earned 66.7% more than the box office collections of Avengers: Infinity War, India’s previous all-time Hollywood grosser. The movie has also been released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, ensuring a larger audience all over the country.
Before Avengers: Endgame released in India, the ticketing portal, BookMyShow.com, reported an advance booking of 2.5 million tickets bought at a peak rate of 18 tickets per second. Cinema chains such as PVR, Cinepolis, Inox, and Carnival, among others, are also directly selling tickets through their apps and websites.
In India, the law typically doesn’t allow for screenings after midnight, but an exception has been made for this movie. Major multiplexes have been granted permission to screen it 24×7.
Endgame‘s performance led observers to analyze how a Hollywood breakout can offer a serious threat to the dominance of mainstream Hindi language Bollywood. Entertainment providers, such as Netflix and Spotify, have realized India is a huge market that, with an increase in the urban population’s disposable income, is an attractive business site for global players.
