India has emerged as a significant player in the global healthcare landscape, significantly shaping the accessibility and affordability of essential medicines. As the world’s leading supplier of generic drugs, India’s pharmaceutical industry services hundreds of millions of global citizens in need. By quantity, India accounts for 20% of global generic drug supply and 60% of global vaccine supply. This includes supplying 40% of medications in the U.S. and 33% in the European Union.

Particularly notable is India’s leadership in vaccines for diseases such as tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, and tuberculosis. The availability of affordable Indian generics enabled an 18-fold increase in AIDS treatment rates in the six years preceding 2009.
The Indian government supports the industry through initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive program, aiming to strengthen in-house API manufacturing capabilities and reduce import dependence for a stable essential medicine supply. Through research, development, manufacturing, and advocacy, the team collectively addresses global health challenges and improves
the quality of life for millions. This essential partnership will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring equitable access to lifesaving treatments and driving progress toward a healthier, more inclusive global community.
