iPhone contract manufacturer, Taiwanese Foxconn, has made significant investments in India and plans to expand further, according to chairman Young Liu during his recent visit to the country. Liu revealed that the company has invested $10 billion in India so far and intends to increase this amount in the coming year.
During his visit, Liu met with Prime Minister Modi and the chief ministers of India’s states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana to discuss Foxconn’s investments in these states. Liu expressed optimism about India’s growth, stating that the country is “ascending” and that Foxconn wants to be part of this growth journey.
A highlight of Liu’s visit was the inauguration of a women-only residential building near Foxconn’s plant in Tamil Nadu. The facility, built by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu, will house over 18,000 women employees. Spread across 20 acres, the project cost approximately $85 million.
Liu emphasized the importance of providing a sustainable living environment for women employees, noting that opportunities for women in India are closely linked to their health and safety at work. He also mentioned that Foxconn hires employees regardless of gender, but in India, women, particularly married women, have made significant contributions to the company’s efforts.
Currently, Foxconn employs around 48,000 people in India, and Liu indicated an upward trend in all types of hiring by the company in the country. This visit marked Liu’s first trip to India since receiving the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, on the eve of the country’s 75th Independence Day on August 15.
