Seattle, Washington-based Amazon Inc., will launch a new service delivering from restaurants ahead of India’s month-long festive season, which starts in September. The company has teamed up with Bangalore-based Catamaran Ventures, founded by IT billionaire Narayana Murthy.
Research firm RedSeer Consulting says that India’s rising middle class has driven the growth of the online food delivery sector, and order numbers rose 176% in 2018.
In India, the industry is dominated by local start-ups Swiggy, backed by Naspers and Tencent, and Zomato, which counts SequoiaCapital as an investor. Amazon’s move into delivery from restaurants and takeaway food outlets will help it to attract customers for its other services, say industry analysts.
