Amazon Air Debuts in India

With the aim of speeding up deliveries in India, Amazon launched its air cargo service, Amazon Air.

India is the first market outside the U.S. and Europe to be covered by the Amazon Air service, which will help the company to create an overnight delivery network of its own.

Akhil Saxena, president – Customer Fulfilment (APAC, MENA & LATAM), and worldwide customer service, Amazon, said, “Amazon Air comes to India at an important time. Our investment in Amazon Air will only further improve the delivery experience for our customers in India.” The launch of Amazon Air is another critical investment to strengthen Amazon’s delivery infrastructure in the country, according to Saxena and Sarah Rhoads, vice president, Amazon Global Air.

The fleet will be operated by QuikJet, a Bangalore-based cargo airline which is a joint venture between supply chain company AFL and Ireland-based ASL Aviation Group.
Initially, the fleet will have two Boeing 737-800 freighters, which can carry up to 24 tons of cargo. Amazon plans to have six such aircraft by the end of this year. To start with, this service will cover four cities of India – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad.

“A dedicated cargo airline gives the company control to move its objects from its warehouse to nearby smaller cities overnight. India will also cater as a hub for other countries in Southeast Asia,” he added.
