India’s growing role as a global hub for research, product development, and innovation is attracting companies well beyond the traditional technology sector. The Netherlands based Magnum Ice Cream Company (TMICC) is the latest example, establishing a new Research, Design & Innovation (RD&I) Center in Bengaluru to accelerate product and packaging innovation for some of the world’s best-known ice cream brands.
The new center will support brands including Magnum, Kwality Wall’s, Cornetto, Carte D’Or, Feast, and Twister. It combines food science, packaging engineering, consumer research, and regulatory expertise under one roof.
More Than a Traditional R&D Laboratory
The Bengaluru facility has many characteristics of a specialized Global Capability Center (GCC). Rather than simply supporting routine business operations, it brings together technical capabilities that can contribute directly to product development, quality improvement, and faster commercialization.
The center houses a laboratory and a digitally enabled pilot manufacturing plant, allowing teams to experiment with new formulations, packaging formats, and production processes.
Its capabilities include sensory testing, 3D packaging prototyping, cold-chain and climate testing, and transportation simulations. These resources will help the company develop products that can withstand India’s demanding distribution conditions while meeting changing consumer preferences.
The facility will support innovation across multiple formats, including ice cream cups, sticks, cones, traditional Indian kulfi, and premium ice cream cakes.
Part of a Global Innovation Network
Importantly, Bengaluru will not operate in isolation. The new center will collaborate with Magnum’s Global Design Centre in Colworth, United Kingdom, and its Regional Innovation Hub in Istanbul, Turkey.
This international network will allow the company to combine global technical expertise with insights into Indian consumers, ingredients, suppliers, and market conditions.
The Bengaluru operation is expected to help shorten development cycles, improve product quality, and adapt global dairy technologies for India’s market.

India’s GCC Ecosystem Continues to Diversify
Magnum’s investment illustrates an important evolution in India’s GCC landscape.
While India’s early capability centers were largely associated with information technology, software development, and back-office services, multinational companies are increasingly locating specialized engineering, scientific research, product design, and innovation functions in the country.
Bengaluru offers access not only to technical talent but also to an established ecosystem of suppliers, research institutions, and startups.
For multinational consumer products companies, this combination creates opportunities to develop products closer to important growth markets while connecting Indian teams to global innovation networks.
Magnum’s new Bengaluru center demonstrates how India-based capability centers can move beyond cost efficiency to become contributors to global product innovation and competitive advantage.
