Anglicized version of "khichdi" a porridge often made from lentils and rice cooked together.  During the British rule of India, the colonizers often mis-heard words spoken by Indian and adopted an anglicized version into their own English. In this case, they also migrated the porridge to a breakfast meal and added fish to the kedegeree!
