Tim Cook (1 November, 1960) is the current CEO of Apple Inc. Cook assumed the role of CEO in 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs, and launching products such as the iPhone X and Apple Watch. He is the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Cook is an advocate for social and environmental causes, championing initiatives such as renewable energy and LGBTQ rights.
Cook visited India in April of 2023, to open Apple’s first physical Indian locations in Mumbai and Delhi. This move came after Apple had maintained a presence in the Indian market for 25 years. During his stay, Cook engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Modi, underscoring Apple’s commitment to expanding its foothold in a nation traditionally dominated by Android products. This 2023 visit was Cook’s second trip to India as Apple CEO, having previously visited in 2016 when Apple was ramping up operations in the country.

Apple’s presence in India is not just limited to the new stores; the company has also established third party factories with its contract manufacturer, Foxconn, across India. This shift is indicative of Apple’s diversification of product assembly away from China. Since 2020, Indians have been able to purchase Apple products via the online store. In January of 2023, 5-7% of all iPhones were assembled in India, and Apple aims to increase that to 25%. India’s burgeoning market has proven lucrative for Apple, with record-breaking iPhone revenues in 2023.
