Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh, with other major cities such as Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. It is the second largest state by area and borders Uttar Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Maharashtra to the south, Gujarat to the west. The population is 73 Million with a GDP of $86 Billion. Total FDI inflows were $1.3 Billion in 2016. The most commonly spoken language of the state is Hindi. English and Marathi are the other languages used.
Indore is host to two of India’s reputed universities, the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management. Bhopal is home to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.
Industries
Agriculture is the dominant industry in the state. Madhya Pradesh is largest producer of pulses, gram, soybean and oilseeds in India. Wheat, soybean, gram, sugarcane, rice, corn, cotton are also cultivated in quantity.
Madhya Pradesh has an automotive cluster located at Pithampur near Indore. Corporations such as Eicher Motors Ltd, Hindustan Motors, Mahindra Two Wheelers and Force Motors have their manufacturing units in the state.
Madhya Pradesh has total limestone reserves of 135 Million tons; Towns such as Jawad, Neemuch are dependent on limestone quarries. Corporations such as Birla, Heidelberg Cement India, ACC, and Everest Industries have operations in the state.
Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals are growing industries in Madhya Pradesh. Corporations such as Lupin and Piramal Healthcare in Pithampur, Ranbaxy Laboratories in Indore and Ipca Laboratories in Ratlam have their manufacturing units in the state.
Multinational companies such as Cadbury (Mondelez) in Gwalior, Procter & Gamble in Bhopal, Hindustan Unilever Limited in Indore, and Coca Cola near Gwalior feature as major manufacturing employers in Madhya Pradesh.
Tourism
The Jahaz Mahal in Mandu, and Pench National Park (setting for 2016 Walt Disney movie ‘The Jungle Book’) are popular destinations for travelers.
Transport
Airports: Bhopal (BHO) and Indore (IDR) are two domestic airports and are well connected to all the major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore.
