Jharkhand is a state in the eastern part of India, and it was carved out from the State of Bihar in November 2000. The name ‘Jharkhand’ means, the Land of Forest and it borders Bihar to the north, Chhattisgarh to the west, Odisha (formerly called Orissa) to the south and West Bengal to the east.
Ranchi is the capital of the state, with the biggest city being Jamshedpur followed by Dhanbad, Bokaro (Steel City) and Deoghar. The population is 33 Million with the GDP being $37 Billion in 2016. Total FDI inflow was $100 Million in 2017. The most common language of the state is Hindi, with Urdu and Bengali also prevalent.
One of India’s premier Engineering Institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology has a campus in Dhanbad. The Birla Institute of Technology along with a business school, the Indian Institute of Management is located in Ranchi.
Ranchi is home to Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) for domestic flights. There are direct flights available from major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata.
Doing Business in Jharkhand
Jharkhand is one of the richest mineral zones globally. It hosts 29 percent India’s coal reserves, 26 percent of iron ore reserves, and 19 percent of the country’s copper ore. Other minerals such as mica, limestone, graphite are also significant.
The state is the largest producer of Tussar Silk in India, contributing to 40% of the India’s total production in 2016.
Jharkhand accounts for almost 25% of the total steel produced in the country. Tata Steel, one of the world’s largest steel manufacturers has plants set up in Jamshedpur. This is the original town where Tata Group first began their steel business, in 1907 by Jamshetji Tata. The Steel Authority of India also has a steel plant that is operated in Bokaro.
