The capital of Haryana is Chandigarh, with other big cities including Faridabad, Gurgaon (now officially named Gurugram), and Panipat. Haryana was carved out from the former state of Punjab and is bordered by Punjab to the north, Rajasthan to the west and south. The most commonly spoken languages are Hindi and Punjabi. The population is 28 Million with a GDP of $75 Billion in 2016. The river Yamuna flows through the eastern part of Haryana. The Aravalli hills run through the southern part of the state.
The cities of Faridabad and Gurgaon are very close India’s capital New Delhi and along with Noida in Uttar Pradesh form the business cluster known as the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Indian Institute of Management has a campus in Rohtak.
Transport
The Delhi Metro, a rapid transit system, serves New Delhi and covers its satellite cities in the state of Haryana such as Faridabad and Gurugram.
Chandigarh (IXC) has an international airport with flights in and out of Dubai. There is also a new proposal for flights from Hong Kong. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) at New Delhi is located close to Gurugram and Faridabad. It is India’s busiest airport with major airlines such as Singapore Airlines, United, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and British Airways operating their services.
Doing Business in Haryana
Haryana is one of India’s largest automobile hubs and accounts for two thirds of passenger cars, 50% of tractors and 60% of motorcycles manufactured in the country. India’s largest passenger car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, and the world’s largest manufacturers of two-wheelers, Hero MotoCorp Ltd have their operations in the state. Automotive giants such as Yamaha and GM India have manufacturing units in Gurugram. Under the Make in India initiative, the Manesar-Bawal Investment region has been recognized as a leading manufacturing hub for business.
Haryana is the third-largest exporter of software services in India and one of the preferred destinations for IT facilities. Large corporations such as IBM, Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft and Google have operations in Gurugram.
Fast moving consumer good companies such as Nestle, GlaxoSmithKline and PepsiCo India have their presence in Gurugram. DLF Group, one of India’s largest real estate corporations has their headquarters in Gurugram. One of the first major American companies to make a significant commitment to Haryana was General Electric by building call centers and business process outsourcing.
The state is known as ‘The Bread Basket of India’ since wheat is the largest crop cultivated and contributes to 20% of India’s total production. It is also one of the biggest producers and exporters of Basmati rice.
