Telangana, the 29th state in India, was carved out from Andhra Pradesh in June 2014. The landlocked state shares borders with its predecessor Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra to the west and Chhattisgarh to the north. The region is drained by the Krishna and Godavari rivers. The population of the state is 35 Million. For the decade before its creation, the gross domestic product grew at 14 percent annually to about $89 billion in 2016. In terms of business, the services sector accounted for 62 percent of the GDP.
Its state capital, Hyderabad is known for pharmaceutical, information technology and defense manufacturing. Due to its strategic location, it is also known as a junction between the North & South of India. Hyderabad’s (HYD) airport is called the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport with major International airlines such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways operating their services. Other major cities in Telangana are Warangal and Malkajgiri.
One of India’s premier Engineering Institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology has a campus in Hyderabad.
Hyderabad Metro, a rapid transit system with operations within the city, is currently under construction. The consulate general of the United States is also present in the city. A famous dish called the Hyderabadi Biryani is popular amongst the country. It consists of saffron rice mixed with meat and aromatic spices.
Industries
Since Telangana has tightened up on enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency, it has taken 1st place on the ease of doing business index created by the World Bank Group.
The pharmaceutical industry serves its purpose for producing low cost products for customers in India as well as exports to Asia, Africa and America worth $2 Billion Dollars. Large corporations such as Dr.Reddy’s, Aurobindo Pharmaceuticals, Granules India Limited, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals have offices as well as manufacturing units around Hyderabad.
During 2016, export of IT products and services of Telangana was $10.4 billion. U.S. firms such as Facebook, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle have offices in Hyderabad.
Historical Facts
The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Osman Ali Khan (1886-1967) is considered to be the all-time richest Indian ever. The Salar Jang Museum is one of the largest museums in the world, consisting of sculptures and paintings from Europe and other artifacts from the Nizam’s collection. Charminar, meaning four pillars is a monument and mosque situated in Hyderabad.
