William Henry “Bill” Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, philanthropist, author, and is chairman of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen. He is considered one of the wealthiest men in the world. From the years of 1995 to 2009, in fact, he was the number one wealthiest (excluding 2008.) Born in Seattle, Washington, Bill Gates has had an interest and passion in computers almost his entire life.
From the early age of 13 through college, Gates has been programming computers. He has donated much money to the cause of education. He was honored Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Gates often visits India for philanthropic purposes, business, and for pleasure. In his words, “a place that is valuable to me for both business and personal reasons”. Since 2003, the Gates Foundation has invested more than US$1.2 billion in projects aimed at improving public health and development outcomes in India; diseases targeted are polio, tuberculosis and AIDS.
Gates almost never speaks at university or alumni gatherings; but in 2003 he made a major exception when he accepted an invitation to speak at “IIT 50” the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Indian Insititutes of Technology. The event kicked off the creation of iit.org and the Pan IIT USA, Inc, the US-based alumni organization of India’s leading tech schools.
In 2011 Bill Gates and his friend Warren Buffett visited India to try and convince India’s billionaires to make major donations to the charities of their choice.
