Nielsen Makes India Its Global Innovation Center

Nielsen, the audience measurement company in New York City, says India now drives 75% of its global innovation. The Daily Sun, cites the company’s chief technology officer, Anil Goel, on how Nielsen uses its teams in India.

Nielsen has more than 5,000 employees in India, roughly half its worldwide workforce. Bengaluru, in southern India, is its largest hub. According to media reports, Goel said the company built its India operation as a global innovation center rather than a conventional global capability center. Local teams lead products, make decisions and work directly with global clients, he said.

What AI changed

The clearest example is advertising intelligence, the business that tracks ad spending across television, radio, print, magazines and outdoor media in thirty to forty major markets, India and the United States among them. According to the report, the work once mixed automation with manual effort, and more than 1,000 people filled the gaps that software could not close. Goel said AI and large language models raised the share of that work done by machines from between 80% and 90% to between 97% and 98%. A few hundred people now handle the manual steps.

Goel said the shift lets Nielsen cover more small advertisers and media outlets. The report adds that AI cut the time needed to identify brand placements on player jerseys from a frame-by-frame audit to a couple of hours, and that Nielsen is working toward real-time tracking.

On audience measurement, Nielsen is building its own identity framework. It uses machine learning and signals such as device IDs, IP addresses and email addresses to judge whether one person watches content on several platforms. Goel said Nielsen has more than 100,000 television panel households, more than one million computer and mobile panels, and data covering more than 70 million homes through its own and third-party sources. The company is also studying how much time people spend on AI platforms and how those tools shape purchases.

Growth ahead

Goel described India as a small market by revenue but one of Nielsen’s top ten for growth potential. The report says Nielsen expects its India presence to grow further after adding DoubleVerify, a company focused on advertising verification and brand safety.

Why it matters

Nielsen describes its India operation as more than a service center, with product ownership and decisions sitting in Bengaluru, and it points to a measurable result: automation of ad tracking that once needed more than 1,000 people. An executive weighing a technology center in India should ask whether the local team will own products and clients, not only tasks.
