Pune, Maharshtra-based Serum Institute of India (SII) invested over $68 million in UK-based Oxford Biomedica plc, a gene and cell therapy company specializing in the development of gene-based medicines. Serum Life Sciences Ltd, a unit of SII, will pick up a 3.9% stake in Oxford Biomedica as part of the deal.
Oxford Biomedica, spun off from Oxford University in 1995, said it would use the funds to develop the fallow area at its Oxbox facility into a flexible advanced manufacturing space expected to come online in mid-2023.
Oxbox was constructed during 2019 and the first phase of development, totaling 45,000 sq. ft., consisted of four GMP (good manufacturing practice) manufacturing suites, two fill and finish suites, and supporting areas such as warehouse, cold chain facilities and Quality Control laboratories.
Currently, three suites are dedicated to producing Covid-19 vaccines and one suite produces lentiviral vector-based products for Biomedica’s other partners.
Serum Institute – the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume – and Oxford Biomedica both produce AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.
