Seafood Imports from India Grow 17 percent

The U.S. is the largest market for Indian seafood products with a share of 26 percent. Seafood imports from India grew 17 percent last year.

India’s Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) said that India exported $5.5 billion worth of seafood last year.  Exported volume increased by 7 per cent, to 1 million tonnes compared to 984,000 tonnes in the previous year, and the value grew by 10 percent in American dollars.

Increase in the production of Vannamei shrimp, rise in the productivity of Black Tiger variety  and increase in export of refrigerated items were the main factors leading the rise in exports last year.  India is also a source of squid, cuttlefish, octopus, crabs, clams and mussels.
