Don’t be surprised to see a colorful display of Diwali as the postage stamp the next time you receive U.S. mail. Congresswomen Carolyn B. Maloney and Grace Meng and Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the United States Postal Service to create a stamp in honor of this celebration, according to India West.
The Hindu festival Diwali, also called Deepawali, celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and awareness of one’s inner light, the dispelling of ignorance, and bringing peace and joy through the awakening gained from this higher knowledge,” Maloney said in her remarks on the House floor. She also added that this festive and important Indian holiday is also observed in America. “It is long overdue that we honor this significant holiday with a postage stamp of its own,” she said.
On Feb 2nd, Maloney and Meng joined local South Asian community leaders, to rally grassroots support to press the Citizens Stamp Advisory Commission of the U.S. Postal Service to issue the postage stamp to honor Diwali. The festival occurs on a new moon in October or November each year.
