Vultr, a cloud infrastructure company based in West Palm Beach, Florida, has launched a twenty-megawatt artificial intelligence computing cluster in Chennai, in southern India, The Hindu reported. According to media reports, it is the company’s largest AI cluster outside the United States.
The cluster will run approximately 10,000 AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processing units, made by AMD in Santa Clara, California. Vultr says it will serve AI labs, startups, enterprises, universities and research institutions, and plans to add AMD’s newer MI455X chips in 2027. The company did not disclose how much it is investing.
The Tamil Nadu government has enabled 150 megawatts of connected power at the site. Twenty megawatts is available for the first phase, said Kevin Cochrane, Vultr’s chief marketing officer. He added that global enterprises have already reserved a large share of the capacity, without naming them.
The company has set a target of 600 megawatts of AI capacity in India by 2028 and one gigawatt by 2029, though it has not committed to firm timelines. “I would be disappointed if we don’t have 600 megawatt live by 2028, and then get into gigawatt by 2029,” said Amit Rai, Vultr’s general manager for AI and enterprise cloud.
Vultr began operating in India in 2022 and has data center regions in the National Capital Region around Delhi, in northern India, in Bengaluru, in southern India, and in Mumbai, in western India. It has more than 10,000 active customers in the country, according to media reports. The company says it has hired more than 100 people in India over the past three months, and its Chennai workforce could eventually reach 5,000.
As part of the launch, Vultr signed an agreement with StartupTN, the Tamil Nadu government’s startup agency, to give eligible startups in the state $45,000 in computing credits and a 20% discount.
Cochrane said India’s engineering talent is a key driver of Vultr’s investment in the market.
