The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India published the final version on its Alcoholic Beverage Standards which will be implemented on April 1, 2019.
These Food and Safety Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations 2018, outline standards for both distilled and non-distilled alcoholic beverages such as Brandy, Gin, Rum, Vodka, Whisky, Liqueur, Wines, Beer, and locally brewed liquor such as Feni and Toddy. The norms also extend to packaging and labeling requirements.
The specific labeling requirements include the mention of alcoholic content, statutory warnings if any, and warning of allergens. If the beverage has more than 0.5 percent of alcohol by volume, it may not be labeled as “non-intoxicating.” No health claims or nutritional information may be included on the label. Alcoholic beverages, other than wine, which contain less than 10% alcohol, need to mention the date, month, and year of expiry. A statutory warning saying “Consumption of alcohol is injurious to health. Be safe – don’t drink and drive” is mandatory.
