KKR, the investment firm based in New York City, plans to provide more than $630 million at current exchange rates to Gentari Renewable India, the India renewable energy business of Malaysia’s Petronas, The Economic Times reported on October 19, 2026.
According to the report, KKR will not take a direct equity stake at this stage. It will have an option to buy a stake later. Gentari Renewable India will use the money to expand its renewable energy and green hydrogen projects and to reduce debt. The money will also fund purchases of stakes in its existing joint ventures in India.
KKR has greatly expanded its interests in India in recent years across multiple sectors.
Gentari Renewable India’s acquired renewable energy portfolio.
Gentari Renewable India has bought a 1.6-gigawatt renewable energy portfolio and is looking for financial partners, the report said. Entrepreneur India reported that KKR’s investment vehicle, Sapphire US Holdco LLC, has asked the Competition Commission of India for approval, based on regulatory filings.
Why this matters: The reported structure gives KKR a financing role now and a choice about ownership later. KKR seems confident that its investment will gain approval from Indian regulators. This should be a vote of confidence for others considering putting money at risk into India.
