Tobacco Companies in India: ITC Limited is one of India’s highest ranked privately owned companies. Forbes Magazine rated it among the worlds best big companies; with ITC ranking third in those same privately owned companies for pre-tax profit. The company has over 20,000 employees at more than 60 locations spanning India.
India is the largest producer and exporter of tobacco in the world. Production reaches 700 million kilograms annually. This, in part, can be attributed to a varied climate across the country, which allows the consistent availability of a wide range of tobacco for export throughout the year.
Like the Indian government did for alcohol companies in 2007, it may be freeing the tobacco industry from license norms and allowing international tobacco companies to set up shop in India. The license norms don’t allow international companies to directly or indirectly have stores in India. Also, foreign investment in tobacco processing is prohibited, as well as in cigarette manufacturing.
The release of the license regime means international companies can set up shop and furthermore, the government would be able to open the sector to global companies for manufacturing, marketing, and retailing. Currently international companies, using the duty-paid route, can import a specified quantity of cigarettes. Also, travelers are purchasing international cigarettes at duty-free shops before entering the country, or international brands are smuggled in. The de-licensing will help greatly in reducing the smuggling of foreign brands that eat into profit margins of tobacco companies. With double-digit growth, South Asia is one of the fastest growing markets for most of the cigarette companies. The US and Europe, conversely, are showing signs of a plateauing, partly because of regulatory issues and lifestyle changes.
