Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. was founded in 1989 and is based in Gurgaon, India. The company engages in the transmission of bulk power in India. It also involves in planning, coordinating, supervising, and controlling inter-state transmission systems. In addition, it operates unified load despatch and communication schemes and regional load despatch centers, as well as provides consultancy services in the areas of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution, and telecom sectors in India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Nigeria, and Dubai.
As of March 31, 2010, the company operated approximately 75,289 ckt. Kms of transmission lines along with 124 sub-stations. It also operates broad band telecom network of approximately 21,652 Kms, as well as intra city access networks connecting more than 110 cities. The company was formerly known as National Power Transmission Corporation Limited and changed its name to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. in October 1992.
