Doing business in Meghalaya: It is a small state in north-eastern India. It has an area of22,429 sq km with a population of 2,318,822. Its capital is Shillong. Meghalaya has only one bordering country, Bangladesh, and one bordering state, Assam.
Economy
Doing business in Meghalaya: It is predominantly an agrarian economy. Food grains, such as rice, maize, and wheat, are the most important crop in Meghalaya. Oilseeds such as mustard, linseed, soybean, castor and sesame are grown. The important fruits currently grown in the state include citrus fruits, pineapple, papaya, banana etc. Important cash crops are potato, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, betel vine, tapioca, cotton, jute, and Mesta.
The main industries are tourism, steel, cement, handloom, silk, polishing, and lime and granite cutting. Some popular tourist spots are the Ward’s Lake, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Polo Ground, Umiam Water Sports Complex, Shillong Cathedral, Tura Peak, and Botanical Gardens. Notable festivals that go on in Meghalaya are the festival of Khasis ‘Ka Pamblang Nongkrem’ also known as Nongkrem dance is an annual five day long religious festival held at Smit Village. Behdeinkhlam is another important festival held at Shillong in the second week of April.
Transportation
Meghalaya has about 7,328 km of roads and six National Highways going through the state. The State has only one airport called Umroi about 35 km away from the state’s capital, Shillong.
