HCLTech Builds a Business Unit Around Anthropic’s Claude

HCLTech, the technology services company based in Noida, in northern India, signed a global partnership agreement on Monday with Anthropic, the San Francisco, California, maker of the Claude AI models. Business Standard reported that HCLTech will set up a dedicated Anthropic Business Unit and a Center of Excellence to build AI solutions and support enterprise use of Claude, according to a company statement.

The unit will also provide secure testing environments and help clients adopt AI-based engineering practices. HCLTech, described in media reports as the third-largest IT services company in India, said the work will build on its engineering, data, cloud and software capabilities and will focus on safety, cybersecurity and governance.

The pact reaches into HCLTech’s products as well. HCLSoftware will become an independent software vendor partner of Anthropic and will add Claude and Claude Code to select products, including HCL BigFix and HCL AppScan. HCLTech will also build both into its AIForce platform for software engineering work such as IT support, code remediation and digital employee services. The company said those uses will carry policy guardrails, exception handling and human oversight for high-impact changes.

Daniela Amodei, Anthropic’s co-founder and president, said in the statement that AI is only as useful as it is trustworthy, and that Anthropic builds Claude to give companies confidence to use it on sensitive work. C Vijayakumar, HCLTech’s chief executive officer and managing director, said the partnership strengthens the company’s ability to deploy AI agents at scale.

Why the timing matters

The company announced the pact ahead of its results for the quarter ended September, the second of its fiscal year ending March 2027. According to media reports, revenue was $3.72 billion, up 2% from the June quarter, the slowest September-quarter growth in three years. Advanced AI revenue rose 28% from the prior quarter to $219 million. Media reports also said HCLTech’s shares rose 7% on Tuesday, and that one brokerage, Anand Rathi, upgraded the stock to Buy partly because of the Anthropic partnership.

Management was cautious on demand. Vijayakumar said at the company’s post-earnings press conference that clients are putting AI, data and operating model changes first. He also said price deflation from AI is still in its early phases, according to media reports. Reports also said clients across India’s IT industry are increasingly tying fees to results rather than hours worked.

What it means for American companies

Many US companies already buy engineering and support services from large India-based providers. This deal ties one of India’s largest providers to a US AI developer, with a dedicated team, secure test environments and Claude built into its own software. American buyers should ask their providers how AI work will be priced, who is accountable for output that AI produces, and what human review applies to high-impact changes.
