Starbucks Opens Its First India Technology Hub in Chennai

Starbucks Corporation will open its first Global Capability Center in India, in Chennai, in southern India. The coffeehouse chain expects the center to create more than 800 technology jobs. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on September 21, 2026.

The center will be located at DLF Downtown in Taramani,  part of Chennai’s OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) technology corridor. It will operate independently of Starbucks’ retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products, which runs Starbucks’ coffee shops across India.

Anand Varadarajan, Starbucks’ Chief Technology Officer, said Chennai’s talent pool and infrastructure drove the decision. “Chennai has abundant skilled tech talent, employees here tend to stay longer with companies, the state has excellent infrastructure, and the incentives offered by the Tamil Nadu government will help in finding new solutions and growing the business,” he said, according to ANI.

Global capability centers typically take on software engineering, financial operations and research and development work for their parent companies. Starbucks has not detailed which functions the Chennai center will handle first.

Global companies increasingly use these centers to run core technology and back-office work at a lower cost than doing it at headquarters, while drawing on a deep pool of engineering graduates. Tamil Nadu’s government, represented at the signing by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Minister for Industries and Investment Promotion Virudhai Magal Keerthana, has courted this kind of investment with tax and infrastructure incentives.

Why this matters: For American executives weighing where to put technology and shared-services work, Starbucks’ decision adds a well-known consumer brand to the list of companies choosing India, and Chennai specifically, for functions well beyond a call center. It is a data point for any company still deciding whether an India technology hub is a fit for its own operations.  Vardarajan  is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras which is located in the Guindy region of Chennai.
