NVIDIA Partners with India’s Payments Authority to Build Banking AI Platform

NVIDIA, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have unveiled an open reinforcement learning environment designed to train artificial intelligence agents for banking. The platform, announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, is described as the first of its kind for the banking sector in India.

A number of Indian American executives report directly to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Jensen had just returned from a trip to India when he spoke at an IIT  conference in the Bay Area which I attended, and it was clear that he had become a fan of  the country and its potential. In the last two years the company has committed much to its India efforts. This is just one example.

The environment uses synthetic data rather than real customer records to train AI models on multi-turn banking conversations. Built on NVIDIA’s NeMo reinforcement learning framework, it allows banks, fintech companies and development teams to build, train and benchmark AI agents against a common standard. The platform follows open standards, including the Model Context Protocol, and is designed for contribution to NeMo Gym, NVIDIA’s open library for evaluating AI agents.

The announcement extends a partnership revealed in February, when the two organizations began building what they call sovereign AI infrastructure for India’s digital payments ecosystem. That work produced FiMI, the Financial Model for India, a small language model fine-tuned for the payments sector. A pilot called the UPI Help Assistant already uses FiMI to resolve payment grievances at scale for users of India’s Unified Payments Interface.

Vishal Dhupar, NVIDIA’s managing director for Asia South, said India “has one of the most advanced digital payment systems in the world that operates at population scale,” according to FintechBizNews. Vishal Kanvaty, NPCI’s chief technology officer, said the collaboration aims to “advance AI capabilities designed specifically for India’s payments ecosystem.”

Why This Matters

India’s payments infrastructure processes transactions at a scale no market can match today, 660 million per day and growing. NVIDIA’s deepening partnership with the body that operates UPI signals that AI-powered financial services in India will run on shared, open standards built for that market. American companies developing payment, lending or banking products for India will need to understand this framework as it matures.
