Mother Dairy, is a subsidiary of the state-owned National Dairy Development Board of India, launched what it calls India’s first soil-degradable milk pouch. Introduced on June 5 (World Environment Day) in the Delhi region, the pouch uses a proprietary technology developed over four years. Once discarded in soil, it breaks down into a bioavailable wax , that is consumed by microbes, leaving no harmful residue. Independent lab tests under international standards confirmed its biodegradability and safety.
For consumers, the pouch functions exactly like existing packaging— the same storage, handling, shelf life, and taste— while also remaining recyclable. The key innovation is its ability to degrade naturally, addressing the problem of plastic waste.
Mother Dairy’s Cow Milk variant is the first product to feature this packaging, marking both a sustainability milestone and the brand’s 10-year anniversary. The company plans to expand this innovation across its portfolio without raising consumer prices.
This innovation sits at the intersection of packaging technology, sustainability, and dairy industry trends.
