Indian Industry Sees Robust Gains in Manufacturing & Consumer Goods

According to government data, India’s industrial output rose at its fastest pace in more than two years last December, driven by strong manufacturing and mining activity.

Overall Performance

  • December 2025 Growth: The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) surged to a 7.8% year-over-year increase, marking a more than two-year high.

  • Revisions: November 2025 growth was revised upward from an initial 6.7% to 7.2%.

  • Fiscal Year-to-Date (FY26): Despite the December spike, cumulative growth for April–December slowed slightly to 3.9%, compared to 4.1% during the same period the previous year.

Sector-Specific Growth

  • Manufacturing: The largest sector expanded by 8.1% in December, a jump from the 3.7% recorded in December 2024.

  • Mining: Output grew by 6.8%, significantly outperforming the 2.7% growth seen in the year-ago month.

  • Electricity: Generation increased by 6.3%, remaining steady compared to the 6.2% growth from the previous year.

Use-Based Classification

  • Infrastructure & Construction: Led the charge with a 12.1% increase, fueled by government spending and project execution.

  • Capital Goods: Rose by 8.1%, indicating healthy investment demand.

  • Consumer Goods: Both segments saw a strong rebound. Consumer durables (appliances, electronics) jumped 12.3%, while consumer non-durables grew by 8.3%, reversing previous months of volatility.

  • Intermediate & Primary Goods: Intermediate goods rose 7.5%, suggesting smoother supply chains, while primary goods saw a more modest 4.4% uptick.
