Former IBM Research scientists have launched Emergence India Labs (EIL) in Bangalore to develop autonomous, agentic AI systems. Moving beyond India’s traditional IT services model, the firm focuses on “sovereign AI” to manage mission-critical infrastructure, including financial networks, telecommunications, and industrial automation.
The initiative targets a growing domestic market where AI integration in manufacturing rose from 45% in 2022 to 65% in 2024, with the sector projected to exceed $8 billion by 2030. EIL aims to prioritize domestic R&D over imported technology by establishing a core research hub rather than a satellite office for a multinational corporation.
Key operational details include:
Technical Focus: Developing AI agents grounded in formal verification (LEAN) to ensure reliable reasoning in uncertain physical and digital environments.
Investment & Scale: Backed by tens of millions in initial R&D funding, with plans to scale to 500 research scientists and engineers within four years.
Academic Collaboration: Located near and partnering with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to build a talent pipeline through joint research and specialized programs.
