U.S. President Donald Trump commented that trade talks with India are “going good” and hinted at a possible visit to the country next year.
Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a friend” and a “great man.”

Key Trade and Sanctions Points:
- In August, Trump had imposed 50% tariffs on India, including a 25% penalty specifically for purchasing Russian oil and arms, which he argued was funding the war in Ukraine.
- The comments have come even as Washington and Delhi are attempting to finalize a high-stakes trade deal this fall.
- India has defended its continued purchases of Russian oil, stating that as a major energy importer, it must buy the cheapest available oil to protect its citizens from rising costs.
- The Trump administration has been pressuring Delhi to increase its purchases of oil and gas from the U.S.Bilateral Relationship and Future Plans:
- Despite tensions over Russian oil, the U.S.-India relationship appears to be improving, with both leaders publicly committed to strengthening ties.
- Bilateral trade reached $190 billion in 2024, with Trump and Modi setting an ambitious goal to more than double this figure to $500 billion.
- Regarding a trip to India, Trump said he “will be going,” possibly next year. Though the date is not clear, the visit may coincide with India’s Republic Day in January.
- Uncertainty also surrounds the President’s attendance at the Quad Summit (Japan, U.S., Australia, India), which India is scheduled to host this year.
