Nvidia Bolsters India’s Startup Ecosystem

Chipmaker Nvidia is deepening its involvement in India, the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. It has joined the India Deep Tech Alliance (IDTA) as a founding member, aligning with a group of private equity and venture capital investors who have pledged $2 billion toward deep tech investments. Deep tech encompasses emerging companies in critical areas such as semiconductors, AI, space, biotech, robotics, and energy.

Nvidia’s contribution to the alliance will primarily be through its expertise and technical resources, rather than a disclosed financial investment at this time. The company will offer technical talks and training to emerging startups via its Nvidia Deep Learning Institute. Vishal Dhupar, Nvidia’s managing director of South Asia, highlighted the company’s goal to “provide guidance on AI systems, developer enablement, and responsible deployment, and to collaborate with policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs.”

Sriram Viswanathan, a founding executive council member of the IDTA, underscored the value of this partnership, noting that Nvidia’s “depth of expertise in AI systems, software, and ecosystem-building will benefit our network of investors and entrepreneurs.” He expressed optimism about India’s rapid pace of innovation, predicting a “significant number of Indian deep tech companies of global repute” within the next five years.

Nvidia’s commitment is well-timed with a substantial push from the Indian government to promote research and innovation in deep tech. Major governmental initiatives include an allocation of over $1.1 billion under the country’s AI Mission and a separate $11.2 billion Research, Development and Innovation Scheme Fund specifically aimed at supporting deep tech companies.

This increasing focus on AI and deep tech has also drawn global attention. OpenAI, for example, counts India as its second-largest user base. Rival U.S. tech giant Google is also reinforcing its presence, recently committing $15 billion to establish an AI hub in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.

The country’s dedication to this sector will be showcased next year when it hosts the AI Impact Summit in February. This high-profile event is anticipated to gather heads of state and top policymakers, alongside global business leaders, including Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, and Google DeepMind‘s CEO, Demis Hassabis, further securing India’s position as an emerging global hub for deep technology.
