India’s computer services exports have surged by 30% since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, according to Franziska Ohnsorge, Chief Economist for South Asia at the World Bank. Speaking at the Fourth Kautilya Economic Conclave, (an annual flagship initiative jointly convened by the Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi, and the Ministry of Finance, Government of India), Ohnsorge highlighted how the release of ChatGPT has significantly boosted India’s software services sector.
Key Highlights:
- In the April–June 2025 quarter, software exports reached $47 billion, marking a 13% year-on-year increase.
- Just before ChatGPT’s release, in July–September 2022, exports stood at $36 billion.
- The Business Process Outsourcing industry is rapidly integrating AI, with 12% of job postings now requiring AI skills — double the pre-ChatGPT figure and three-fold that of other sectors.
- India ranks 46th in Oxford Insights’ Government AI Readiness Index, outperforming many emerging markets and nearing advanced economies.
