IKEA Plans “Second Wave”of Growth in India with $1.26 Billion Investment

Swedish furniture giant IKEA is launching a major new phase of expansion in India, having already invested over $1.26 billion since 2018. Patrik Antoni, CEO of IKEA India, described this “second wave” as a push toward faster growth through enhanced local sourcing, improved logistics, and a stronger omni-channel strategy.

🛒 Expansion Plans:

  • New store formats will include:
    • Large flagship outlets in Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai, and Bangalore
    • Upcoming stores in Noida and Gurgaon, in the Delhi National Capital Region
    • Smaller city-center stores, planning studios, and expanded online platforms

🌍 Global Trade & Supply Chain Strategy:

  • Jesper Brodin, CEO of INGKA Group (IKEA’s largest franchisee), acknowledged challenges from evolving US tariffs but emphasized IKEA’s readiness to adapt.
  • He noted IKEA’s supply chain is more regional and locally integrated than commonly perceived, which helps mitigate global trade uncertainties.

India’s Strategic Role:

  • India is now a key sourcing hub for IKEA, helping the company diversify and localize its supply chain.
  • Antoni highlighted India’s growing importance in maintaining affordability and resilience amid shifting global dynamics.

Beyond Retail:

  • IKEA’s India footprint includes:
    • A global capability center
    • A digital hub supporting international teams
    • Two major Ingka Centers shopping malls under construction in Noida and Gurugram

This expansion underscores IKEA’s long-term commitment to India as both a retail market and an operational base.
