Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL), a subsidiary of Pune, India-based Bharat Forge Ltd., has signed a Letter of Intent with AM General, headquartered at South Bend, IN, for the supply of advanced artillery cannons manufactured in India. This marks the first-ever agreement for the supply of artillery cannons from an Indian defense company to the United States.
(Several years ago I was invited to by the head of Bharat Forge to visit their automotive manufacturing unit , the largest single location metal forging facility in the world. It was almost fully automated and as modern as anything you might see in Europe or America.)
This new deal, part of a wider agreement between the two companies, will see KSSL supply made-in-India artillery solutions, including mounted, towed, and ultra-light gun systems in 4.1 inches and 6.1 inches calibers.

Speaking on the sidelines of the IDEX in AbuDhabi, Baba Kalyani, chairman & managing director, Bharat Forge Ltd. said, “We at KSSL are proud to be the first Indian company to supply cannons to the U.S.” John Chadbourne, executive vice president of AM General, noted, “This LOI is an important milestone in our long-term collaboration. We are confident that KSSL’s proven capabilities, combined with our commitment to innovation, will provide advanced artillery solutions for the U.S. defense forces.”
The agreement is seen as part of a broader effort to enhance defense industrial cooperation between India and the U.S., following recent bilateral defense discussions. It also underscores India’s growing defense manufacturing footprint and its emergence as a trusted supplier of advanced weaponry to global markets.
