India Gets Special Attention on Day 1 of Trump Administration

India’s foreign minister S. Jaishankar met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. He also met the Speaker of the House Mike Johnson & Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Rubio said he wants to “further deepen the U.S.-India relationship, in particular on critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and on advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region.” Additionally, Rubio emphasized the Trump Administration’s desire to work with India to advance economic ties.

Further, Rubio convened a meeting of the “Quad” Foreign Ministers which includes Japan & Australia in addition to India.

In years past, this kind of first-day international focus would be reserved for NATO allies and for neighbors such as Canada & Mexico. Clearly, India is perceived as a crucial partner this time around.
