GE Healthcare Plans to Expand R&D, Manufacturing in India

Peter Arduini, CEO of GE HealthCare (GEHC), shared his strategic vision for the company’s operations in India during a  interview with Forbes India. His plan centers on transforming India into a crucial hub for GEHC’s global operations through enhanced manufacturing capabilities and strategic partnerships.

Arduini emphasized GEHC’s shift from importing components to developing deeper relationships with local suppliers in India. This aligns with a broader industry trend among medical technology companies to create more integrated and diversified supply chains rather than relying on a single country. He highlighted India’s attractive business environment and supportive government policies regarding technology as key advantages.

Regarding areas for improvement, Arduini focused on the need to accelerate existing positive developments, particularly in infrastructure. He specifically pointed out the importance of streamlining supply chain integration between major manufacturing centers such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bangalore suggesting that faster progress in this area could significantly benefit the industry.

The discussion also covered GEHC’s merger and acquisition strategy, which currently focuses on global software companies and strategic partnerships. The company has established an investment fund to support promising startups, offering guidance through board representation and potential future collaboration or acquisition opportunities. GEHC is particularly interested in expanding its digital capabilities and plans to develop an ‘application store’ model. This platform would enable startups to connect with GEHC’s extensive network of equipment and patients, with the company taking a percentage while fostering a broader ecosystem of partnerships.

When asked about the possibility of listing Wipro GEHC locally in India, Arduini expressed a preference for leveraging India’s capabilities to support global operations rather than pursuing immediate monetization. While he acknowledged that scenarios exist where monetization could make sense, the current focus is on developing GEHC India as a technical powerhouse that supports the company’s worldwide operations.

Throughout the interview, Arduini’s responses reflected a clear strategy to position India as more than just a market or manufacturing base. Instead, he envisions India as an integral part of GEHC’s global ecosystem, contributing significantly to the company’s technological capabilities and innovation efforts. This approach aligns with both India’s growing prominence in the medical technology sector and GEHC’s global ambitions to create more resilient and integrated operations.
