India has long expressed a desire to have a “blue water navy”, one that can projects its power and relationships any where on the planet. Indian naval ships routinely make friendly calls on portds all over the world now, including the United States. So the news below should come as no surprise.
The Defense Acquisition Council, led by India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved a $2.6 billion capital acquisition package to strengthen India’s maritime capabilities. The package includes:
1. Naval Boats:
– 31 Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts for low-intensity maritime operations
– 120 Fast Interceptor Crafts capable of high-speed (45 knots) maritime security missions
2. Helicopters:
– 6 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III for the Indian Coast Guard manufactured by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and equipped with advanced radar systems, sensors, and multi-role capabilities.
Strategic objectives include:
– Protecting maritime trade routes
– Addressing increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region
– Preparing for potential security challenges, particularly concerning China’s naval presence

Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi highlighted future plans, including the induction of over 90 warships and submarines by 2037, with two nuclear-powered attack submarines in the pipeline.
The package also includes additional defense upgrades such as electronic warfare systems for Su-30 MKI aircraft and modernization of tanks and armored vehicles, demonstrating India’s comprehensive approach to defense modernization.
