Seadquartered in Mumbai, announced its planned facility in Brookshire, Texas outside Houston. This facility will be one of the largest U.S. solar factories by 2027. The facility will have 3 GW annual capacity when it opens in late 2024, expanding to 5 GW. It will create over 1,500 jobs and add a solar cell facility by 2025.
The Houston-area factory is supported by a long-term supply agreement with Redwood City, CA, headquartered SB Energy, a clean energy developer backed by Japan’s Softbank Group.
Waaree brings critical technologies to boost American solar production and reduce reliance on overseas sources, while supporting U.S. jobs, said Sunil Rathi, Interim CEO of Waaree Solar Americas.
Under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, solar developers receive additional subsidies for using American-made equipment, and producers also get new incentives. Most major components in Waaree’s solar modules will be U.S.-made.
Waaree’s U.S. manufacturing follows a venture backed by India’s Vikram Solar announcing a $1.5 billion investment in the U.S. solar supply chain this year.
Waaree has already made inroads in the U.S. market in 2022 by supplying 4G W of solar modules from its India factory. Its Texas facility represents India leveraging its growing solar expertise to tap into surging American clean energy demand and manufacturing incentives.
With China currently dominating global solar manufacturing, India and the U.S. are rapidly building domestic sectors that can compete.
